“In the middle of a difficulty lies opportunity.” -Albert Einstein
Inductive charging has been around since the 1990’s with the electric toothbrush from OralB. Since then, it has made strides in technology with the smartphone and even the smart cars (electric cars) of the new age.
In 2010, the Qi (pronounced Chee) Standard was developed; the method of induction charging for most applications utilizing resonant inductive coupling for applications up to 1.6 inches of clearance between the charging pad and the electronic device.
Samsung was the first major cellular device company to implement wireless charging in the Galaxy S6 and has manufactured this feature into most – if not all – devices since its introduction. Apple was behind the times and implemented inductive charging with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and the iPhone X and is now available as a standard feature in the iPhone 11.
What’s nice about the wireless charging feature is the limited need to plug in a charger. If you[ve noticed, there’s 2 major types of chargers left in the smartphone market: the apple product charger and the USB 3.0 (new to micro USB). Since these updates, charging a device in legacy methods leads to damaged cords or, in severe cases, damaged charging ports that prohibit fast charging and regular charging with the cable charger.
Wireless charging is slightly slower than cable charging, but the tradeoff for damaging cables is 10 fold, I’ve found. I have 3 chargers, not a single one that charges my Samsung Galaxy S9 on the first plug-in attempt. Using the wireless charging function has been stress-free and simple, and I have found it to be more reliable. I have 3 wireless chargers, but my favorite is my recently acquired Millenium Falcon Pad.

The pad is a lightweight hybrid plastic that’s easy to use and comes with a USB 3.0 cable. Have you been using your iPhone 8 pluas as your music or audio book source while working from home? Well, I’m sure that battery is dying fast and limiting your functionality, since the charging port and the headphone port are the SAME (#1 reason I don’t like Apple. #2 reason is its lack of compatability with non-apple products). With the wireless charging feature, you can CHARGE and LISTEN at the same time! Great feature, I know!!
