“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” – Marcus Aurelius
R2D2 is an astromechanical droid used for repairs, manuals, technological upgrades, and mechanicsal engineering throughout the universe. He can communicate with other droids through binary beeps and blips that indicate a type of morse code. Other droids understand this, especially his companion C3PO, a protocol droid from Tatooine. What’s fascinating, is that in the books and throughout the fandom, R2’s conversations are recorded in plain English for the reader to connect with the ever-present astromech.
R2D2 carried the message to Tatooine for Obi-Wan to hear, a holigram of Princess Leia asking the Jedi Master for assistance in the newly launched rebellion against the Empire. This is the first time he’s seen in cinema, since the original trilogy was first created in 1977.
In the early days, a man rolled around in the droid, as the actor portraying the iconic character, but after the 1983 movie The Return of the Jedi concluded and prequals began, the droid was fully automated.
My brother Luke gave me this mini crockpot for Christmas this year, 2020, and its the perfect size for Fondue for One.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- White Wine
- Emmentaler Cheese
- Gruyere cheese
- Extra Sharp White Cheddar
- Steak
Now for the prep:
Ingredients
- 1 cup Dry White Wine
- 1 Cup Emmentaler cheese at room temperature
- 1 Cup Gruyère cheese at room temperature
- 1/4 Cup Cheddar at room temperature
Instructions
Shred or grate all the cheese finely and toss well with cornstarch.
Add wine to a heavy bottomed pan and bring to bubbling simmer and start adding cheese by the handful. Keep whisking as you go to incorporate the cheese till the mixture is smooth and the cheese has melted. The mixture should be smooth but have a slight elasticity to it. Season with salt and pepper if you like.
Transfer to a fondue pot and serve with dippers such as bread bites, lightly blanched broccoli, potatoes, steak bites, breadsticks etc. and chilled white wine.
Notes:
Make sure you keep the heat to low while cooking the fondue. High heat can make the fondue break and you’ll be left with separate wine and cheese.
If your fondue breaks and you have no other option but to throw it, try blending it in a blender. This is not authentic but it works and keeps the fondue together.

To make it worthwhile, I watched Episode 1 of the Skywalker Saga (the Star Wars movies, not the Star Wars Stories made into movies…).
Until Next Time, Readers!
