Nerd Post #12: Jabba the Cupp

Coffee – the roasted seed of the Coffea plant is one of the most widly consumed beverage in the world.

Africa – ealiest cultivation of the beverage brewed by the Yemini people in a similar manner as today can be found back to the 1400’s. They cultivated the seed from the Ethiopian Highlands trekking from the Somali coast (which, is now a popular location for modern pirates, that pose a risk to freighters across the world). By the 1500s, the drink was used all throughout the Middle East regions. Africa is still a prominent region of the drink, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya leading the charge. These ‘beans’ are rich in flavor and yield characterisitcs specific to their region.

For a lighter, less bitter flavor profile, roasters use the berries of the coffee plant. Kona, Hawaii has a deep-rooted respect for their unique flavor profiles, and especially their use of the berry in roasting. Kona coffee is only grown in a small region on the Big Island of Hawaii, and it only spans a few hundred acres, yet is popular all over the world. Hawaii and California are the premier coffee growers for the United States, but roasters and agricultural gurus are experimenting in Georgia, which would prove interesting since the region was primarily used for cotton and peanut cultivation throughout history.

The largest producers of coffee in the world are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, India, Ethiopia and Honduras. These locations provide for their coffee plants by being part of the ecological system known as Tropics. They yield plenty of rain and heat for the plant, but equally important, is the lack of direct sunlight, since its mostly overcast and the dense rainforests that prevent the yellow orb from penetrating the foliage of the Coffea plant.

Now, onto the point of this page!

I LOVE coffee, in almost all of its forms. I like the rich flavor, even the bitterness that some blends have. My favorite though, is actually the peaberry roast blend that limits the bitterness and provides a smooth finish.

In 2020, I went to the Big Island for a vacation, and spent a large portion of my time drinking the dark, rich beverage from the region. Kona coffee, in my opinion, is the best coffee I’ve had. Its unique to the US, and has an air of mystique, since Hawaii is so far from the mainland US.

When I’m here at home in Virginia, I buy my coffee from Cost Plus World Market, for 2 reasons:

  1. They have a large variety from all over,
  2. When you buy 10 bags, you get the 11th free!

Here’s the link to their website, specifically for the good stuff:

My favorites, The Hazelnut and Texas Turtle Blend. But, there’s 110 options, so go crazy! And, if you’re shopping in store, they have little bags where you can try multipe roasts for a fraction of the cost!

As you may have figured out already, I’m also a huge fan of Star Wars. So lets chat about this AMAZING coffee receptacle, Jabba the Cupp. (Click the link below to buy it)

The Old Office

The last thing I think I needed was 30oz of caffeine a morning, but I’ve definitely enjoyed the aesthetics of this guy.

Do you know Jabba’s backstory? You can do a deep-dive here, by clicking the link below:

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Jabba_the_Hutt_-_Galactic_Gangster,

Or you can read on to hear about my limited knowledge of this space slug.

Jabba is a space slug who runs a mob of criminals, like smugglers (Han Solo) and Bounty Hunters (Boba Fett) throughout the galaxy and is based on Tatooine. Jabba is the villian throughout the saga for Han and the gang as the story plays out, and he even captures Princess Leia and chains her in his palace. He also has Han Solo frozen in Carbonite as a trophy for all the man’s past transgressions with the Hutt.

That’s all for now, dear readers!
