Labor Day in New England

Dear Readers,

Is Vermont considered New England? Or would you call it the upper midwest? I still think of it as far enough east to make it New England… but you can always comment to let me know!

I flew into Burlington on a Wednesday afternoon- I did NOT know this airport was so small. It’s also under construction! (I’ll never escape it apparently – all of NoVA has been under construction the 5 years I’ve lived there).

Airport Welcome Sign!

Even Avis Preferred has to stand in the rental car line, and then I was off with my Hyundai Kona all ELECTRIC.

  • I do not own an electric car
  • I do not have all the apps and maps and things to know where to charge an electric car
  • I have no idea what to google for a charging station nor know which one to pick!

So, I kinda figured it out as I went. I found a few free spots that take decades to charge and a few that I paid for that take far less time. But it’s relatively affordable. Who knew?!

As for getting around VT, the average speed limit is 50 MPH – what?! Open roads and angry Vermonters will have you speeding. Promise. I drove down to the Brandon Inn in Brandon, VT for a couple days where I spent the majority of my time seeing covered bridges.

Then I took a drive to Manchester, VT for the American Museum of Fly Fishing. I would’ve never thought to go here without being so close.

After an adventurous walk through time, I charged the stupid kona and headed back up to Brandon for Tacos and the Distillery.

Leaving Brandon, I headed west to Ticonderoga. I hit a few stops on my way: a covered railroad bridge, the Ticonderoga Ferry, and finally Ticonderoga the town.

I charged the Kona again and walked around Ticonderoga for about 5 hours waiting for that trickle charge. I hit up the original Star Trek Set tour! That was randomly unexpected.

Now I know what you’re thinking reader – I’m not a trekkie! This is true. But my Twin is, and this adventure is for her. It was neat regardless.

Now, the real reason I crossed Lake Champlain – Fort Ticonderoga!!! If you know me at all, you know I love America and particularly, American History and even more specifically, the American Revolution.

I left Fort Ticonderoga and headed to Stowe, VT and toured the Ben and Jerry grounds. I didn’t feel like walking around a factory floor all day again and just grabbed some delicious ice cream to go. They have a Flavor Graveyard!

Moving on from there, I hit up some breweries and roadtripped around Lake Champlain. No Champ sitings though!

A must on Lake Champlain is one of the Vanderbuilt siblings’ houses- Shelburne Farm. The barns are made of brick in the late 1800s.

Shelburne is now an area educational farm for agriculture in VT. You can visit it regularly, walk the hundreds of acres trails, and even stay at the house as a B&B!

It was a relatively slow trip after that, and left feeling refreshed and ready do it it all again instead of go back to work!

Until next time, @Leaderofnerds, Jessica
